Last night, Board of Health Chair Councillor Diane Holmes proclaimed Ottawa Public Health (OPH) Week on behalf of His Worship, Mayor Jim Watson. From October 14 to 20, 2012, OPH will be showcasing several of its community programs and services to further increase public awareness, participation and engagement in its many initiatives.

"The programs and services highlighted this week demonstrate the positive impact that Ottawa Public Health has on the health of our community," said Councillor Holmes, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Health. "It is our hope that this week will increase the awareness of these important initiatives available to residents of Ottawa."

Sarah Horton, an Ottawa high school student who spearheaded last year's first Ottawa Health Day, accepted the proclamation and presented the many activities taking place during Ottawa Public Health Week. "Demonstrations on safe and nutritious food preparation, outreach to new parents through the Baby Express Program, and dental screenings for school-age children are but some of the programs that will be exhibited this week," said Ms. Horton.

Community food advisors, volunteers that provide hands-on information on safe and nutritious food preparation and storage practices, were also present to accept the proclamation with Ms. Horton.

"Through the many activities taking place, Ottawa Public Health Week provides more opportunities to make better connections with the people we serve – the residents of Ottawa," said Dr. Isra Levy, Medical Officer of Health. "We hope that residents come to our events and get to know more about the great things that Ottawa Public Health has to offer".

The announcement was made at a meeting of the Board of Health, where staff presented a balanced draft budget for 2013 as well as several reports including, influenza and school immunization programs, and reducing youth exposure to artificial ultraviolet radiation through indoor tanning.
